My dad was on duty as he was with St Johns ambulance,he would take me I'm sure we got a stick of Wigan rock when you went in
Owd Viewer, yes sticks of rock were given to the kids Have you still got it<g>. or any of the programmes?
Brilliant stuff.
Ron.
Photos show the Poolstock meetings to have been well-attended, but if dwindling attendances for the 1960 meetings had been foreseen, then perhaps programmes for those meetings had also become fewer; making the programme shown here to be more of a rarity.
Have you seen the colour photo of Jack Winstanley's Wigan racing jacket, on 'Defunct Speedway Tracks'? - it's in a terrible state.
Yes Philip Ive seen it There was a Wigan Panthers racing leather on Ebay a few years ago and to my regret I didn't bid on it...
Ron. So you hadn't bid on the racing leather, more's the pity. You might even have looked quite dashing in it, striding along through Wigan's nightlife ('it would have needed a bit of Dubbin, though').
Ron after my father died in 1967 i moved and went to live with my aunty and most of my personal items including the programme was lost.
I asked my grandson if he dubined his football boots. He had no idea what I was talking about. I don't know how he plays football in them, he never cleans them Just takes them off and throws then under the stairs He knows he will get a new pair when these are knackered... Not like in the old days when one pair of boots had to last you a few years until you grew out of them. I loved the smell of Dubin. and religiously always cleaned my boots and my 'Casey T Ball' when I brought them home. after playing with them. Young uns today don't know they're born <g>
That's right, Ron, some of them aren't too-bothered. I picked up a sports bag that had been left behind ('presumably by a pupil') at a bus stop, some years ago, which contained pairs of shorts socks and football boots - I left them there. The good old 'T' ball, eh? Footballs used during my first year (1960) at Up Holland Sec' were 'very' large and spent more time in the air than on the ground. But the introduction of the 'spanking' brand-new, and smaller, orange Tom Finney balls, made our matches much more enjoyable. I remember the moment I first touched one: As I trotted on to the pitch at the start of a Games lesson, our Sportsmaster, Mr Peet, rolled one towards me, and then waited for my response. And after rolling it underfoot a few times, I 'probably' responded with something on the lines of "It's alright", but I do, also, recall moving along with it soon afterwards - soon knocked the shine off it I did. A great little day.
My mate Billy molyneaux was with St. John's ambulance, l went with him to a meeting,Billy who was only sixteen at the time ,attended one off the riders who had injured his town halls, l said to billy as we left, do you think it will end is career , he said no but hit,s ended mine
