Does anyone know the onward career of David?. At this time, I was away, in the forces.

An interesting article Ron, thanks. Duncan Edwards had covered for the injured Ray Wood before being replaced by Dave Gaskell, and 'Big Dunc's' response to seeing 'Pop' trotting onto the field can be found in another interesting article concerning this Roy of the Rovers story eg 'Exclusive: Interview with Dave Gaskell.'

i remember playing cricket against him. he played for orrell red triangle at the time. i was playing for poolstock and we actually played them on world cup final day 1966. the powers that be that day didn't cancel the fixtures, but it turned out ok as it happened, because we bowled them out for not so many. we managed to get to watch the match from half time onwards, so all was well. i recollect david opened the batting, wasn't a bad cricketer. i was behind the stumps for poolstock, and i was thinking we are in for a long afternoon here the way david was batting. howard gill was our opening bowler and he was quick. there was quite a bit of sledging between the pair of them, but gilly couldn't get him. he stayed in for quite a few overs, and i,m thinking , we are in for the long haul here. gilly starts another over and he bowls a very quick beamer at david, he ducked, and the ball hit the bails and flew over my head. there was a few expletives between the two as david walked to the pavilion. after that, the others didn't offer much resistance. we got them out cheaply, knocked them off, then we all went into the games room to watch the match.can't imagine these days there would be full cricket fixture list if england was in the final!!

Thank you LDB. An interesting profile relating to David Gaskell. A generous act regarding his Charity Shield medal. He also earned a F.A. cup medal. Did he retire locally?.

I used to live near Springfield Park and my mother did the laundry there. I remember one day (I was aged 7) I tried to lift a bucket of hot water and scalded my foot. Dave Gaskell was in the ground that morning and took me up to Wigan Infirmary in his van. He was a gentleman and am sure, still is.
