This montage is compiled from a film taken on May 20th 1939 at Odsal Stadium, Bradford showing an end of season 7 a-side Rugby League competition.
Top photo, those wearing the Wigan shirts, left to right, Eddie Watkins, Jim Sullivan, Johnny Lawrenson, Albert Davis, Hector Gee, not sure about the next player possibly George Lloyd and finally Jim Jackson.
Bottom photo shows 4 players carrying cups won during the season. I think they are left to right, Wigan's Jim Sullivan with the Lancashire Cup, Alex Fiddes, Huddersfield captain with the Yorkshire Cup, Halifax's captain Harry Beverly with the Challenge cup and finally a Castleford player who I cannot name with the Yorkshire County League Cup.
Arthur Atkinson was the usual Castleford captain but isn't present. Arthur held the record for a successful penalty kick of 75 yards which he made at Knowsley Road.
The trophy that's "missing" is the Championship Cup which Salford won by beating Castleford, looks as if they did not take part in this competition, if they had then I would have expected Gus Risman to have been holding the trophy.

Keith, another from your archives to jog the memory.Jim Sullivan, Hector Gee and Albert Davies ( Who coached amateur R L after the war) would be at the end of their careers, Johny Lawrenson would have been 18 or 19 and I remember Eddie Watkins as the Welsh captain who left Wigan and went to Belle Vue Rangers

AB, it was while I was a pupil at WGS that I used to notice a Wigan Corporation worker often cutting the hedges around the lovely Mesnes field. It was a while later that I was informed it was Albert Davis, yet another Welshman and ex-Wigan RL player. I had no idea of course and would never have guessed it.
