Why isn`t Hindley pronounced with Hind to rhyme wih kind and not with Hin to rhyme with sin?

Comment by: Garry on 14th March 2016 at 04:58

It is, look Hindley....HINDley....HIND and then LEY. Hindley. Simple!!

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 14th March 2016 at 09:36

It`s you that is simple, Garry.

Just noticed a date of 1921 so it isn't an early Victorian card.

Comment by: Philip Gormley. on 14th March 2016 at 14:59

Ron's card is quite likely to be from the set listed in this year's catalogue as:
J. Baines & Son, Cricket and Football Cards, etc (Shapes) c.1905.
The number of cards in the set is unknown while each card is valued at £40.

I agree Ernest, and why not ? Along with, bind, find, mind, rind, and, as you say, hind and kind etc. My favourite of these is wind (that blows) and wind (to coil) It's a funny language is English.

It always surprises me that Rubgy League has always been the poor relation of our national sports - football, cricket and rugby union!
Even in Leeds United's hay-day under Revie, rugby league was more popular in the city!

Phillips the auctioneers in London hold card auctions from time to time which attract buyers across the world!

St HELLens sounds like it rhymes with sin, Ernest!

Comment by: Jonno on 16th March 2016 at 09:31

No GW, that's St Hellins, said properly, it rhymes with hens, and, where's this place called Wiggin that people talk about ? no such place.
