Eric, backed Wigan Park a few times when it was running .Did the owner have a Butcher's shop in Wigan ?

Jinksi - I understand the owner was a tailor and gents outfitter.

Jinksi , Walter Grrenwood was a type of Credit Draper, he had large vans, filled with stock which would go to various parts of Wigan and district and indeed further afield working in conjunction with firms such as Provident and Wigan and District clothing voucher. Other local people who owned racehorses were Kennedy the bookmaker from Wiend and Baileys (Scotch Bakery) Mesnes Street.

I am trying to research the artist who painted Wigan Park and Marylebone Park (racehorses), but can only make out the surname, Pye. Can anyone give any information please?

Nic, have you had any joy regarding your search
for more on the artist?

Comment by: Nic on 26th June 2019 at 19:52

No Phillip, can't even find a possible artist. There was an artist named Pye who lived in Ireland, originally from England, but the signatures don't match. Was thinking of approaching a reputable auction house.

Nic, I hope that you manage to pin-down your mystery artist (probably a local artist). At the time of my previous post, I'd seen the painting on an internet page that chiefly concerned present-day Wigan shop Pye (art/gifts?). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to relocate that particular page yet hope that above mentioned "Pye" will give you added impetus during your search. Good Luck.
