I knew Bill Lyon then. Wigan RLFC made overtures for him to swap codes but he refused. Also they had great dances in the club house each Saturday.

Comment by: Alan Price on 8th November 2014 at 10:41

Was Colin Nicholson Jacks dad?

Comment by: glyn on 8th November 2014 at 22:07

If the picture was taken in 1970 I think Colin would have been about 21 so jack would have been a bonny baby,

I went to school with Colin and can honestly say he was a great lad and a good friend.

Comment by: Jimmy Williams on 8th November 2014 at 22:40

Colin Nic? Is that the man who first picked up the ball and ran with it, thus inventing the game of rugby

Comment by: gideonfel on 9th November 2014 at 00:18

The "Chris" might possibly be Chris Unsworth, who used to play at Newton le Willows. Looks a bit like him, but I may be wrong. Pete Phillips is missing, of course - he was at Leeds Uni at the time.

Comment by: Kevin Williams on 9th November 2014 at 10:13

Yes he did first run with the ball, then passed to Jimmy Williams who invented the Knock on.

Thought I had a photo of Allan Price playing rugby then I remembered the camera hadn't been invented.

Comment by: gideonfel on 10th November 2014 at 17:30

I played with Pete Phillips at John Rigby and at Leeds Uni. One of the hardest tacklers and nicest blokes I've ever met!

Comment by: Nick Woods on 11th November 2014 at 01:01

Stripped and ready for action - one of the finest teams of 70s porn stars ever to wear the shirt!

I KNOW HE WOULD BE A LOT OLDER THAN THE OTHERS , BUT IS IT NOT BARRY FISHWICK , THE MISSING NAME

Comment by: dick fish on 11th November 2014 at 11:34

no it's not Barry he is a lot older than that lot

Comment by: simply the pest on 11th November 2014 at 13:11

could the mystery man be barry fishwick.

Comment by: Trevor Bamber on 11th November 2014 at 20:01

Can't be Barry Fishwick because he was bald in 1970, could it be Malc Holland when he used to dye his hair blond, because he thought he looked like a famous DJ who's name can't be mentioned.

Comment by: Ben on 11th November 2014 at 21:19

Good to see an old school friend Harold Bibby who was certainly a late developer, don’t recall him playing any sport at school but seen here as a regular member of what was at that time one of England’s top Rugby Union teams. Credit to him and Orrell’s development programme.

Comment by: Sam Bar on 12th November 2014 at 09:01

Colin Nic - a man so old Spielberg hired him as historical consultant on Jurassic Park!

Comment by: K K. on 12th November 2014 at 19:39

Colin Nic was my coach at Orrell St James rugby league club, great coach and top bloke. Went back to Orrell RU to coach the colts side, and I believe was one of the driving forces in getting Orrell going again after they had lost everything.

Comment by: Kevin Williams on 13th November 2014 at 16:42

definitely not barry fishwick,to young, don't think malc holland played rugby, but it could be keith walsh before he was ill.

Comment by: R.T BRAD on 13th November 2014 at 22:14

MALC HOLLAND NEVER PLAYED AT ORRELL , BUT WENT THERE A LOT JUST TO HANG ROUND RUGBY PLAYERS . DON'T KNOW WERE HE IS NOW . STOPPED GOING OUT WHEN WE WENT DECIMAL,COULD NOT GET HIS HEAD ROUND IT.HOPE HE IS DOING OK

Comment by: Norman Stanley Fletcher on 14th November 2014 at 00:39

Is this not a picture of a prison xv rugby team? There's Sutcliffe and West
In the back row, and Colin Nic is a ringer for Nilsen!

Comment by: fairpaul on 14th November 2014 at 17:52

Keith Walsh was in the colts team 1969 to 1971 and Harold Bibby was the colts forwards coach for the 1970 / 71 season. Link to colts team of the time http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=7&id=13832&gallery=Orrell+RUFC&offset=0

Comment by: Rod Bradshaw on 15th November 2014 at 08:10

Saw Colin Nic getting some exercise on an incredible shiny new bike the other day.
I asked, "Where did you get such a fantastic bike?"
Colin replied, "Well, yesterday I was out running in Dean Wood just minding my own business when this beautiful woman rode up to me on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want!"

Rod Bradshaw are you former Wigan great Tommy Bradshaws brother?

Comment by: Roland Rothwell on 16th November 2014 at 21:08

No Rod is the son of Tommy
Tommy made his debut in the same year as Colin Nic

Comment by: H U M .DART on 17th November 2014 at 18:56

are you sure Tommy and rod are not brothers

Comment by: Kevin Williams on 22nd November 2014 at 13:51

Went to school with Rod Bradshaw will be about 70ish now, and its nice to see him up and about again after his little problem.

Comment by: Jeff Slevin on 16th December 2014 at 18:03

Frank Littler was my coach at John Rigby. Great player, great coach and a top bloke. Also came across Des Seabrook as I got older another true gentleman.

Comment by: Chris Norburn on 20th June 2020 at 00:06

I played on the wing for Orrell from September 1970 to February 1973 before moving to N Devon And had the privilege of playing with two classy centres in Bill Lyon and Frank Littler and the one and only Des Seabrook. As a local dentist I can remember putting 2 or 3 stitches in Martin Beattie’s cut above his eye in the changing room after one match . Also when big second rower John Leigh came in for a filling he did actually grab me by the b—-s and said “ we aren’t going to hurt each other are we?”
He had a great sense of humour and I was fine after I had a lie down . Great days. Chris Norburn
