Running this on TNS at the moment:
This is from Andrew Ross's book "The Road From Wigan Pier" and is described as "An early Wigan Athletic team photo, date unknown" which is absolute rubbish.
The big shield in the middle looks like The Laithwaite Shield which was awarded to amateur teams in Wigan from 1908 onwards.
Anyone shed any light?

The winners of Laithwaite Shield before WW1 were as follows:
1914 - 1915 - Ince P.C.
1913 - 1914 - New Springs St. John’s
1912 - 1913 - New Springs St. John’s

1910 - 1911 - Abram P.C.
1909 - 1910 - Ashton Y.M.C.A.
