The original picture appears to be very popular, so I've taken the liberty of adding colour, to hopefully bring some of these young lads back to life.

As someone said on the original post, we hope that a significant number of these lads survived the next four years.

As Abram was a pit village,I expect most of these lads worked in the Maypole collery.My grandfather worked down there when he was 15 years old in 1910.I think in 1914 it was either the pit or the army,NOT sure??,Some choice!!

its great to see these old photos with colour. Makes all the difference and doesnt make you feel like the photo was taken all that long ago.

what technique did you use to colour the photo

Thanks Melanie. I use an old version of Photoshop (v7) and I colourise by creating a large number of adjustment layers if that makes sense to you. I then adjust levels, blur some edges, dodge and burn, alter some opacities etc etc :)
