A small photo I discovered in my late father's rugby memorabilia. It shows the Welsh RL team that faced England in March 1945 at Central Park, Wigan. My father is extreme right on the first row (Jack Bowen), he played for Wigan 1938 to 1948.

My father was serving in the Forces (R.E.M.E.) at the time he played in this match, a few months later I remember him leaving in full uniform for abroad, (a very emotional moment). LIttle did I know he was going as part of the build up for the invasion of Japan. The Atomic bomb, dropped a few months later, was a dreadful thing but it did mean soldiers such as my father was spared the inevitable and terrifying invasion of that country.

Three of these players had Wigan connections. Eddie Watkins and Jack Bowen were on the Wigan books at the time of this match and Joe Jones had been a Wigan player a few years earlier.
