I am currently researching my family (the Oakes)tree and am as far back as the marriage of John Edwin Oakes in 1881 - think this is different Oakes family to the one in the picture! If anyone is related to an Oakes who were colliers in Hindley area I would like to hear from you.

John Edwin Oakes - married to Eliza Ann in 1881 in Wigan was my Great grandad's dad I have found as I am currently helping my mum track out family tree. Be good to know what you have found out too...

Been a while since i did any research but I have a copy of the full marriage cert- if you look further back there is a Bristol connection. May be easier to find me on facebook - look for the olympic torch!

there was Oakes in whelley years ago ,they ran a pub .their sons name was harry. I'm going back about 1954 ish
