Was his father's name really George Formby or was that just his stage name?

Hi fathers real name was James Booth. He had troubled years when young and changed his name to Formby after seeing the name on the side of a train wagons (also the name of a northern town). Unsure why he changed his christian name.

So if a bus had come past before he saw the train wagons would he have been named George Ribble?
