I wish I'd know this subject was coming up last week - when I was reading through back issues of the Wigan Observer from between 1917 and 1920... as I would have kept the reference for this story:
George Snr. was taken to court, I think by the management of the Hippodrome, for failing to turn up for his booking there. He was engaged at £175 for the night... but welched on the deal to take up an offer of £250 the night to appear in a London theatre. He lost - and had to cough up £175 as compensation.
