A photo from the heyday of Oldham RL showing Wiganer and former Beech Hill resident Frank Daley walking onto the Oldham pitch in 1952, in front of a record crowd, behind his Oldham captain Frank Stirrup and legendary Aussie Clive Churchill.
Oldham played at the Watersheddings for 108 years. Their nickname of “Roughyeds” is derived from the rough felt used in the hatting industry in which many were one time employed in the town. The Aussies lost only one out of 22 club games on this Tour, this one ended as a 7 - 7 draw.

Aubrey. Is that number 72 on the sergeant's shoulder, or is number12. I think when we were serving, on promotion the sergeant took a different number than that, he had had, as a constable. The sergeants' had the very low numbers, from number 1, onwards. When I joined I took the number Don Black had had, number 118. I forget what number he had as a sergeant.

Sorry Aubrey, the sergeant will be Oldham Borough Police, not Wigan Borough Police.

Albert,
I believe that is what is known as a faux pas.

Aubrey. I would have put it a little stronger "Senile Decay"

The name Don Black rings a bell. I think he went to work for Alfred McAlpine when he retired. Your Brian would know Aubrey.

Broady,
Yes that is him.

This may be of some interest to you Aubrey. Yesterday when I came home, I found on the doormat a card telling me that there was a parcel to be collected from the post office collecting point. It stated that the parcel was addressed to Birt Short, nobody addresses me as Birt, Bert yes. This morning I went and collected the parcel. In it was a large metal torch with the Kent Police motif, in metal, on the front of it. The letter accompanying it is self explanatory. This is what it says.

Dear Birt,

You don’t know me, but I do know your son Andrew. He was once my D/I when we worked at Tonbridge.

I am a serving D.S. in the Kent Police, and recently I discovered this torch on Ebay. I saw that on the back was scratched Pc 3550. I was determined to track down that officer, and return his torch to him.

I was delighted to discover that it belonged to Andrew’s dad, and I am very happy to be able to get it back to you.

I hope it brings back some good memories.

Wishing you a very happy Christmas.

Jim.

Full title. Det. Sgt James Farley.

The torch was issued to me when I first transferred to Kent from the Wigan Borough Police on 6th, July, 1964. Fifty years ago. I was P.C. 3550 then. Things like this do add to Christmas.
