I find these images intriguing. It may just be a matter of circumstance. i.e. a cold day or a long wait before the photo was taken or perhaps something the photographer said or did but there's hardly a smile here or was it a matter of deprivation, a childhood bereft of comforts or perhaps essentials? Who knows - if only these children could speak to us.

Joseph are you sure this is 1930's? I have this photo among my dads photos. He was born 1912 and lived in Poolstock, but 1930's he would have been working! Hope someone can recognise other children. Always wondered who was in this photo?

this photo was most likely taken about 1920 not 1930 .my dad was born in 1912. sorry about the error

The Victorian collars on the boys and general dress of the children reminds me of a pic circa 1900- 1910? I think as has been said here before, in those days people had to hold (their facial expressions) very still whilst the photo was taken to get a clear image. and.. am I imagining it or is that a kind of bandage tied around the boys head in front row? Intriguing if it is.. I know it was done for toothaches and mumps!! I remember seeing this even years ago when I was a young girl
