I recollect an occasion involving the Home Guard. In the early 1940s, I stayed during the week, at an elderly aunt's house, in St Clement's Street, Spring View. The Home guard building was opposite her house. One evening she had been visiting a friend, and I had been with her. On our way home, as we turned into St Clement's Street,an Home Guard soldier thrust a bayoneted rifle towards us and shouted " Who goes there" It was a bright moonlit night, and I still remember the glint of the moon, on the bayonet. He certainly gave us both a fright. All my aunt could shout was " It's only Eady, it's only Eady."
