This is a photo of my wife's great grandad, 'Jack' Lowe. We're not sure where the shop is, or who owns it. The window bears the name 'W.J.Lowe' which is the name of both Jack and his father, but I can find no record of either of them having owned a shop. As far as we are aware they were both in the brewing trade, and Jack lived for a while at least in Balmoral House, Hindley (now a dentist surgery'. Any info anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin, was your wife's maiden name also Lowe?

Comment by: Kevin Lowe on 11th March 2013 at 15:53

Hi, it was indeed. I've gone far enough back in the family trees to be sure we're not related though :)

I have a fascination for old shops....their stock,shop-fittings etc.,....I would love to be able to walk in there!

My headmaster at Hindley county secondary school was Mr John Lowe. He lived in Hindley Green, maybe at Balmoral. He was head after I left in '64 and transfered to Mornington Road school, so I understand. He was interested in local history and a published author. He had/has a son Roger who is a solicitor. He was a very far sighted and inspirational teacher. I hope that you can trace him as a relative.

I agree with you Irene....I would just love to wander in and have a mooch around.....:-).

What is so amazing is in the photo, I can see at least eight displays advertising only cigarettes.....wouldn`t be allowed nowadays!

If he was posing outside the shop because it happened to carry his name on its window, you'd expect him to be posed directly in front of the window where his name appeared. I'd conclude therefore that the shop belonged to a relative.

How long ago is it since Westminster cigarettes were last on sale?. Probably before, Pasha, and, Grand Turk.

Roger Lowe was in my class at Hindley Grammar School.

enidan, I can imagine that sometime in the future will be heard, "Mum, did they really advertise chocolate in the past, isn't it bad for you?"

I know of at lest 2 places where you can wander around a shop like that - only they are both Co-ops. The first is at the Mining Museum at Radstock - near to Bath, the other is at Beamish. I remember at Beamish, I was enjoying myself going round, there was a Dolly in a tub & a little lad asked what it was, he was so thrilled when I told him.

It reminds of the Temperance bar in Ince

Just come across the above comments. The Lowe shop-keeper is not related to my family as far as I am aware. My Father John Lowe was the local Headmaster in Hindley and researched our family tree for several generations back and there were no shop-keepers to my knowledge, is the shop definitely a Hindley shop, as my Father had many photographs of old Hindley and I have not seen this one before. Good luck in your search.

Don't know if you solved this shop but I think it may be the one on the corner after what was the old coop.Iwas looking at an old photo on wiganworld and you can see where the corner of the building has been bricked upd

If you click on to enlarge it you see something on the left hand side of it .That makes me a little doubtful whether it is King St in Hindley could be wrong .Looks more like Leigh to me .Can anyone explain what that obstacle on the left is .

This is my uncle Jack Lowe. He was married to my Mums sister Evelyn (nee Betton. I have seen the very same photograph in my family collection.

Hi Kevin.
Sorry but I didn`t address the original query, ie location.
I`m pretty sure that Aunt Eve told me the the shop was in the Bolton area, not sure exactly where.

I have a letter from a John Lowe - he applied to my dad for a job in 1970 when he was 32. ( My dad kept papers all his life!) Mr Lowe said he had been a police constable in the 60’s. He lived at 69 Thomas Street, Hinckley Green, Leigh. Any relation? ????

Maybe we are related. My mother's maiden name is Marjorie Lowe. She was born in 1928 in Wigan. John Lowe was her grandfather, martied to Martha Lowe. He was Mayor of Wigan in the 1920s.
I was born and live 8n Sao Paulo, Brazil because my mother came to live in Brazil in 1958

I’ve been researching my own family tree, the Wood family around Hindley . About 1791 Joseph Wood married Ann Lowe, daughter of Thomas and Ann(Lucas).
Just wondering if anyone has any info and if this relates to Roger Lowe’s family tree .
