This is a picture of my Dad after he had been given the title of Major in Bombay in India in 1943. He was there to aid the 9th Ghurka rifles in a training capacity. Dad entered the army when he was 19 where he was in the Grenedier Guards from 1939-41 then the Royal Engineers 1941-43. He was also a Dunkirk Veteran.

We have a photo of my father-in-law taken In Bombay in 1944. I wonder if your dad's pic was taken in the same studio- Rembrandts?
F-i-L rose to be an Acting Major in the Royal Artillery, and had a great admiration for the Ghurkas, alongside whom he fought his way to the Burma Road with the Chindits.

Rev. David Thankyou for your comment. The photo was taken by VERNON based in Dhera Dun in 1943. My uncle, Dad's brother had written on. The back that he had received his Majority in Dhera Dun in 1943. He was discharged from the Royal Engineers and then enlisted into the Ghurkas.
Cheers!!,

Did your father have any sisters or brothers with Irish connection? I assume he is no longer with us, where is his grave. We may just be related!

My sister in law Margaret Rose( her maiden name) thinks that your dad was her dad Alfred Rose 's first cousin.
Margaret has lots of memories of the Hayes family from what Alf spoke about.

Thank you Anne....it is so nice to hear from you....and thank you for the email....the Rose family is a mystery to me as nothing was ever said about it....being my Dad's mum's maiden name....My parents gave me Rose as my second name to keep granny Hayes' maiden name going....my granddaughter also has it as a second name...please keep in touch...regards Lizzie... :-)

i remember visiting Nora and her mother when they lived in carless lane. I believe my dads mother Sarah and Nora's mother were sisters. I know Maureen and leanora and Jane. Maureen was a florist at that time. Leanora worked in a baker in Wigan. I travelled to Bolton technical college with her. She was engaged to a man called Sam. Jane was still at school the convent in Wigan.
