Definitely wearing the Africa Star, and of the 8th Army, as I stated on the other version of this pic.
The number 8 on his medal ribbon shows he served with the 8th Army between 23 October 1942 and 12 May 1943.
Mick, looking at his hands, could they suggest to you that he could have have been a mechanic/fitter/engineer ??
Good point Ken R, he could well have been.
The photo has been taken in a studio, and given the state of his hands, and his dishevelled battledress (stripe missing from left arm), I wondered if he had perhaps snatched the opportunity to have it taken when out of the line, whilst on active service, perhaps in Italy, where he would probably have served after the Africa campaign.
Tje fact he is wearing a woolen battle dress rather than a lightweight one, and the '8' clasp on his medal ribbon suggest to me the photo was taken after commencement of the Italian campaign.
