I think this certificate is a precursor for leaving school at 14 to start work. Has anyone more information? It is signed and dated on my Grandmas 13th birthday

If you had the requisite number of attendances in at school, you could leave at the age of 13.My dad was born in the same year and he left school at 13.

I have a copy of my grandmother (then Rachael Reid later Hesketh Labour Certificate (Form 146a)and hers is dated 6th April 1899!! It confirms that she was 11years of age and that she had reached the 5th Standard which meant that she had passed in reading, writing and arithmatic in the standard mentioned or higher! On checking the 1901 census she was in service at Hindley Hall(now a Golf Club) and her occupation at 13 years of age is shown as a ''nurse'' I think she was a nanny to the children living in the 'big house' She had attended StJohn's School, New Springs and was living in at Hindley Hall at the time her family were housed in Platt Lane, Scholes. I'll post her certificate on the website in the near future.
