Their are quite a few photos of unknown soldiers on WW so I thought I would publish one with a bit of background information for a change.

Corporal Claude Dean Thornton Mortimer and his wife Mary Louisa Ratcliffe pictured after their wedding at Wigan Register Office in early 1917. Shortly after on the 1st March he went off to war on the Western Front.

Claude was born and bred in Hindley and was a school teacher employed by Hindley Urban District Council. All his siblings had 3 or 4 forenames including Thornton, the maiden name of their mother. Their father Charles originated from County Durham and was a professor of music, the family lived at 43 Atherton Rd, Hindley.

Claude joined the 2/10th Batallion (Scottish)Kings (Liverpool) Regiment (more commonly known as the Liverpool Scottish) in December 1915.

After the war Claude lived at 96 Market St, Hindley, he died in 1962.

We had a teacher at St Benedicts called Miss Mortimer, wonder if she was part of the same family. She taught me in the infants class around 1957/1959, she was a really nice teacher.

Looks like Claude was born in Wigan in 1885 so would have been around 76 or 77 in 1962.

Chris - I think your teacher will have been Sabina (Beena) Mortimer. She was Claude's daughter and, yes, she was a lovely lady.
