Thomas Harrington was born in Bracklagh, Charlestown, in 1888, he came over to Ince, Wigan to join his brother John around 1902, were he met and married his wife Mary Ann, they had two sons John & Jimmy. Mary Ann's parent's were also from Ireland, County Clare. He worked in the coal mines until he had a bad accident and could no longer work there. He then decided to go into the pub business. He was the Landlord of the Red Cat in Hindley Green, in the early 1930's. He was the Landlord of the Bird I'th Hand in Ince Green Lane, not sure when he became the landlord at the Bird but he was certainly at the Bird in 1937. Sometime after 1937 they moved to Southport and lived there for the rest of their lives. This photo was taken in Southport.

Hi Chris,
You have put some wonderful photographs on this site, I have enjoyed everyone of them , I suppose the reason being I remember Mr and Mrs Harrington so well. If you notice I didn't call them by their christian names because that was not how we addressed our elders in those days.
I never heard my parents talk about the Harringtons being in the Bird I'th Hand . I was born in 1940 and I only remember firstly Mr and Mrs Valentine ( I think her name was Matty) and then by at least 1946/7 Billy and Madge Belshaw. I used to go in the Bird to play with their daughters Vera and Dulcie. They also had a brother Alex. Many thanks for all the memories you have conjured up for me.

Evlyne so glad you have enjoyed the photo's. Terry was born in the Bird in 1937 when his grandparents had the Bird, Nellie & Jimmy lived with Jimmy's parents in the Bird when they first got married. Terry says he remembers going in the pub aged about 18 and he remembers the landlady being named Martha, she would have been in her 60's or 70's by then it probably was the lady you refer to as Matty. She was his Grandma Prescott's, (his mum's mum)cousin.

Sorry Evelyn you said the landlady Matty was gone by 1946/7 so maybe Terry's remembers her from his childhood not when he was about 18??

Hey Chris
Check Rothwell family photos. Looks like my grandparents were photographed in the same studio. Backgrounds are identical. Regards Roy

Hi Roy, well spotted, it is the same studio, love these old photo's don't know why they are much better than the photo's of today, even with all the new technology.

Please help with Original owner/builder of this pub. I have letters by my ancestor Ellen Molyneux(Gregory)Daughter of Mary Hannah Workman-Molyneux, and Thomas Molyneux.that states that her great Grandfather Lucas, and Great Grandfather Molyneux or Workman were in competition one built bird inh hand the other built(public house) on other side of the road Ince Green Lane. Something about names on the Church(door) of Cromwell rubbed off. Mention church of Cromwell. Thank you, Tracy Molyneux USA
