Brenda, was Can Row the row we knew as East View, just by the Amberswood Tavern, facing towards Ince Park, and with a brook running in front of it?
It's so heart braking but i wish that i had such a letter to look at from my grand dad
yes thats right Irene. i can only just remember it myself.
I had a great great uncle living at 11 Can Row in 1903. I like to think he knew Evan. A great uncle from Forge Street was wounded at Gallipoli. So sad, all those brave loyal men lost. Irene Roberts and I will definitely honour Evan's memory next tuesday when we visit Ince Cemetery
I think Brenda said it's in Wigan Cemetery, Neil, where the crematorium is, but we'll be going in both, so we'll find it.
thanks neil thats very nice of you.
How sad, their must have been a lot of "last letters or postcards" written those days.
The only War Memorial in Wigan Cemetery is the 'Cross of Victory' - the standard War Graves Commission cross erected in many War Graves sites. It does not bear the names of any of the fallen.
The Ince WW1 Memorial is in the Ince Cemetery on Warrington Road. Sadly, some names were so badly eroded when it was renovated a few years ago that they were lost - leaving gaps on the memorial.
There is no definitive WW2 War Memorial in Ince. Some names are recorded on the side of Christ Church tower, and more are recorded in St Mary's church. Thankfully, Dr Eric McPherson took the trouble to try to trace all who are, or should be, recorded when he published his 'Roll of Honour' of the Borough's memorials in 2001.
It is Ince cemetery on Warrington Rd.
