This is the oldest photo I possess of my Grandfather and it is sadly in poor condition. I have no info regarding his Army Regiment/Medals unfortunately. Born in Southport on 10th March 1880 he later became a Painter by trade and at the age of twenty three he married Elizabeth. They resided in Ince along with their six children - all boys! He passed away in 1965.

Nadine, I was just interested in the pic of your Grandfather & as I'm a bit of an amateur family history freak I looked him up on the 1881 census....you probably have all that information but just in case.. James was the son of John & Frances Kellie who in 1881 were living at Moor Lane Cottages, Great Crosby, Lancs. John was a house painter who was born in Liverpool abt 1855. Frances was born in abt 1852 in Selby, York. James was their only child when the census was taken.
You can look up army records, service, medals etc. I think they are all held in Glasgow nowadays but are available on line too.

Its such a nice pic of James, perhaps some Whizz Kid on WW can tidy it up for you.

Uniform could possibly be Royal Field Artillery, Nadine.
If you could post a higher definition scan, I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

Nadine, your Grandfather is wearing the uniform of a Gunner of the Royal Horse Artillery. Hope this helps.

Nadine,
Did your father have a brother Ken, who died in WW2?

Comment by: Joseph on 31st March 2011 at 14:45

My apologies, Nadine. I have put "Horse" Artillery instead of "Field" as Mick rightly suggests.

Comment by: Nadine on 31st March 2011 at 17:23

Sorry Margaret, my grandfather didn`t have a brother by the name of Ken.

How fascinating is the above and what kind people, going to all that trouble. I'm sure this will help link your family tree. I didn't notice the year he served, as I would have guessed he couldn't have been uncle!

My husband's great grandfather was Alfred Kellie, the brother of James. He was born in Wigan and became a painter and signwriter. His daughter Ethel May married Richard Barker, my husband's grandfather.I have just started researching the family history and am delighted to have come across this photo and information. The 1891 census for All Saints, Wigan shows the Kellie family living in Chapel Lane.

Hi Nadine I am Sue Kellie’s grandson and I love learning about family history. Stephen Kellie sent me a copy of the photo and I love it. I have heard a lot about you from Stephen Kellie( my uncle). Do you know anything about bout one of Norman Kellie’s brothers...
