Taken from a Pathe Preview of a short film about Nellie Smith and her family from 14 Ascroft Avenue, Beech Hill in 1947. Here she is returning home. The film is a commentary on the effort being made by housewives such as Nellie who as well as bringing up a family also worked 5 days a week at Eckersleys No.3 Cotton Mill on the "Leisure Shift" from 6pm to 10pm.

Thank you for your comment Josie. The short answer to your question is yes. The price is £40 (Pathe charges are always ridiculous I think), and I assume it will be a dvd but I don't know. The site can be visited as Andrew Lomax stated at http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=55710. However this is the film that was cut (left on the editing floor as they say) from the original that was "published" . This one can be seen under the title of "Britain gets down to it" and this costs £50 ! Best wishes, Keith.

Hi Keith I am sure there is some computer Wizz Kid out there who could get a copy from the Pathe web site, when it's playing?<g>

Hi Ron, I'm sure you're right. It's going to work out a lot cheaper and the loss in quality with today's HD cameras will be minimal. The only drawback will be the "Preview" lettering on the film. I'm sure the high prices asked by Pathe are targeted at the commercial market not the individual.

thanks keith!

Hi keith I didn't mean for someone to film it. I meant that someone could possibly download the film to their computer, from the web site. <g>

Thanks for clearing that up Ron. Not sure I know if that could be done (I'm no computer expert) and just how much memory it would take.

yes, this can be done by using screen capture software but it will only be as good (quality wise) as the stream from the website. The software i have for doing this has expired for my use.

Hi DeDubya, yes quite right. I use "preview" (iMac) which allows screen capture but as you say quality is completely down to the original source.

Nellie Smith is my grandmother. The little boy in the picture is my father. These pictures are brilliant. Keith is there any chance you can email me these stills.
Thanks
