Their happiness shines on their faces.

Is this Sid the Milkman? He lived next door to my mum and dad in Platt Bridge... I remember he drove a magnificent blue Jaguar. He still gives me a wave as we pass each other.

Hi Hilda, I think we are related in some way, my mam was Alice Walsh nee Edwards and we lived in Ainscow St. till I was seven. My dad was Joe and I have three older brothers Joe John and Terry. The photos are lovely and its great to see St Marys church in the background you all look so cute.

This pic is intriguing. It appears to have been taken off Clarendon Street. Ainscow Street would have led off to the right from the wall and fence behind - it was a one-sided street, with pens opposite. Are they actually in the grounds of the church? Oh, for more pics of this area!

Rev Long... I think the photograph is slightly deceptive. It does look as if the end of the terrare behind the children ends very close to the south trancept, but there is actually another street between them (Clarendon Street). I think the children are stood on Ainscow Street. I think the wall to the lower right is actually the church boundiary. I can remember the church and the wall, but I cannot recall the terrace houses still being there when I used to walk home from Britannia Bridge School (for wood and metal work).

In fact Rev. Long... you yourself posted a later photograph with a similar aspect after the demolition of both the above streets. Album->Places->St Mary's Lower Ince... item 1816.

Take note that the trancept in the photograph has a double arched window, the east sacristy end had a triple arch, and it was a railway line by the north trancept... so that must be the south trancept end we are looking at... yes?

You're right, of course, Dennis. I'd not looked closely enough at the buildings to the left - Ainscow Street, as you say - making this the only pic I've seen showing any of the houses there. The part of the church visible behind is the chancel at the East end of the church, and the windows are South-facing.
Could the original poster please email me? I'd like to use the pic in our next magazine.

I have to say, it was a magnificent church... almost cathedral like in it's size. A great shame it had to come down.

Hilda, I do apologise, my wife has just told me Sid was very poorly just before Christmas. Fact is, I was distraced by St Mary's. But I should have asked before now.

Fot that I apologise.

How is Sid?
