His father was also named Robert Alexander, Alexander being his mother's (Emma) maiden name. She came from Suffolk, and married Robert Derbyshire in 1867, in Bolton. Her sister and brother-in-law (named Brabben, later distorted to Brabbin) also moved from Suffolk, to Liverpool and then to Lower Ince. Robert's father (also Robert) was the manager at Sandbrook Mill when it burnt down in 1881.
