I make no excuses for publishing this photograph I know it isn't Wigan, but it could be. As it could be, any other town. The picture shows two pupils of Varna Street School, Openshaw, Manchester on their way to school to be evacuated, in 1939.
For anyone of a certain age, this will bring back memories of looking into a typical, at the time, Aladdin's cave of goodies, with a 3d bit burning a hole in their pockets.
Where these children looking for something to buy for their journey to their new homes? Or where they having a last look at a shop which may not have been there, when or if, they came home.

Many children from The Channel Isles were evacuated to Lancashire prior to the occupation and those I know all say how well they were treated.

My time at that age was circa 1956 however i do recall the type of socks the lad was wearing very well.We chose the pattern at the top of the socks when we we went to the shop, the rest of the leg was always the same knitted bit.
