Alexandra Park, Newtown. It shows me being pushed along in a pram in 1965 by my mum.
St Marks Church is in the background and shows how the park used to be kept many years ago.

Great photo, was born & bred in Manor Street so it brings back many memories, looks like your mum's walking away from the "old man's cabin" as we called it.

I took my own boys to the park last year on a trip to Wigan. The monument was damaged and vandalised with spray paint and the gardens were devoid of any flowers. It looked tired and old and in need of some proper maintenance to bring it back to its former glory.

This was in the days of Wigan Corporation when we had our own buses and the parks had keepers such as Dick Atherton and old man Sweeney. They also had their own gardeners who grew the flowers and cut the lawns. Does anyone remember the grass tennis courts and the putting green? All now gone in the name of "Progress" Don't make me laugh!! The worst thing that Wigan ever did was to become part of Greater Manchester. Our identity went and with it, lots of amenities.

This photo brings back so many memories. When my eldest brother and I were in our teens, we played rugby on the park with an old sweater screwed up as a ball. The old tennis courts were still there and we played on the grass at the side.
I've met many a girl in the park!!!!
What memories.
I am posting a photo of my Grandmother and mother in the park - taken approx 1946

I lived in Mitchell St, Newtown, and Alexandra Park was everything to me in my childhood.
I played Rugby there daily on the lower section near the bitumen tennis courts.
I remember well, playing tennis on the grass tennis courts, and receiving a right bollocking from the park manager for losing a golf ball on the putting green, when I got carried away and wacked the ball out of sight.
I left Wigan in 1966 when I was 16, and came to Australia, where I've lived ever since, I consider myself a very lucky man, this is truly a beautiful and magnificent land.
It is very sad to read the comments on the WW web site regarding how things seem to have deteriorated with the passage of time, I'm just so glad that I can remember Wigan as it was, "Punchy Griffith", Boston, Ashton, Sullivan, The Emp,The Ritz, these are special memories, it is a wonderful, melancholy, rememberance of a lovely time since past.
