Wrestling at Springfield Park, date unknown but probably before WW1.
The two rows of houses in the centre are Second Avenue and the roof to the right of this is the old stable block.
Photo supplied by Frank Orrell from a glass plate

Fascinating photographs, thank you for posting them. Miss the old place and who would have thought that all these years later an estimated TV audience of 400 million would be watching a game taking place in Wigan this Sunday. Superb stuff!

Is Frank Orrell any relation to Johnnie Orrell, a friend of my father's, who I believe was a policeman and who lived in Springfield in the 50's and 60's?

The wrestler on the left looks like Joe Daley from Standish Lower Ground. He was 10st. 6lb world champion between 1919 and 1921. He moved to the USA in 1921, never to return
Wrestler on left is Joe Daley, my great great uncle. His brother Frank also in picture second in from left.
