My name is Linda Armstrong and I was born at 28, Alfred Street in 1953. I knew there was a pub on the corner but I couldn't think of it's name. So thanks for the info.

My Great Nanan lived at 10 Duke Street for about 40 years. Her name was Elizabeth Thorpe. She died in 1952. Lovely to see the street as it would have looked back in her day.

I remember Betty Worthington too,I lived in Brook Street which was off Duke Street. Betty did hairdressing for a while,i remember when pop star Helen Shapiro emerged onto the pop scene in the 1960's, her hairstyle became very popular. I took a photo of this hairstyle to Betty and sure enough she did my hair in that style,it was admired by all my friends at school.Good to hear that Betty is still living in Duke Street, i hope that she is keeping well.

I Lived at No 30 Duke street(Maisonettes) in the 1960's. I am desperate to get some pictures of the coal tips from the bottom of the street showing the path up to and including what we used to call (affectionately the YoYo to show my boys our 'playground'. If anyone can help please e-mail me. Thanks Bill

Pamelas mother had a shop near Methodist Church, Not sure of street name, where she did sewing then moved to Heath Road Ashton.Pam was in St Pauls Girls Brigade.

The street name where Pamela Wilkinsons mother had her shop I think was Brackley Street. I was at St Pauls school at the same time as Pamela and yourself

Hi Stephen (Kirk). Just saw that photo and thought -'hey that looks like my best friend Pamela Wilkinson'. Sure enough it was. Didn't know your Mum is her cousin -what's her name? What a great surprise. We have been friends for ever or as they say in the modern world = Bff. I grew up in Arthur St, around the corner from Duke St.where my Grandparents Fairhurst lived. Pam's mum (Auntie Eva as we always called her) passed away but Pam still lives in Ashton. It's been years since I visited her as we now live in USA and have since 1977. I have spoken to her on the phone but was wanting to know if by any chance she is on computer so I could E-mail her. Didn't get a Christmas card this year!! I know she IS still with the Girl's Brigade.
See this is what I love about Wigan world.

Also I remember you - Deirdre. Looking back, I loved St, Paul's school -not so cure how much I loved it back then!

Hi Doreen, I am an old goose greener and I'm very friendly with Pam. I'll tell her about your message but I don't think she is on the internet.

Comment by: Stephen Kirk on 11th June 2009 at 21:19

Hi Doreen, Just seen your comment, my mums maiden name was Doreen Atherton and her parents were John and Florence Atherton.Incidently I was born at 33 Duke Street. When I next speak to mum I'll mention you to her, Pamela visits every week.

Comment by: Doreen (Fairhurst)Morters on 20th July 2009 at 21:43

Hi Janet Green, Sorry I only just saw your write up. It must be ages since I looked at this. Thanks for the comments and I'm so glad Pam still has contacts in good old Goose Green. I was really hoping she would be on the Internet. I used to call her occasionally and although I was over there last September, it was for my Mum's funeral and in 2003 for my Dad's. It's time I came over for a 'catch up' visit. When you next see Pam, please give her my love and tell her to get on the Internet right away please. There's so much I'd love to share with her. We were best friends for ever or as they say now BFF. See? 63 isn't so old eh? Nice to talk to you. Later!
Doreen

Hi Stephen,
Just saw your comments today -better late than never eh? Of course I remember Doreen Atherton and glad to hear Pam visits every week. It's so heartwarming to hear of old friends getting together -would be even nicer to get together. I just wrote a note to Janet Green too as I saw both of these today. Please give Pam my love. Tell her myself,my brother Keith and my sister Carole drove up to Ashton Heath to see her about 3-4 years ago(came over for Dad's funeral), but she was out. That was our only chance that visit. Sorry I missed her. She's always in my thoughts.
Thanks for taking the time to let me know. Don't know if she knew -Mike has Parkinson's too - I know Auntie Eva did. My Dad also. It's time that was cured.
Talk later.Regards,
Doreen

I was born in Brook St, in1947, and there has not been any family called Winstanley living there. The house you mentioned was always lived in by a family called Hughes. There was winstanleys who lived in Knowlesly Ave, which is the other houses off Duke St the same side of the street as Brook st, they were coal merchants. The houses are still there. Hope this helps.

Comment by: Eileen Todd on 13th April 2017 at 18:23

Sorry, I meant to say Winstanley are Mather.

Comment by: Ann Taylor on 10th January 2020 at 19:56

I am just looking at these comments about a family called winstanley in knowles Ave. Tom worked at the gas works, it was his brother jimmy who was a coal merchant and I think he lived in orrell. Winstanley family was made up of Tom and Gladys with 4 children , Pauline, Edwin, Glenn's and Jean and they lived at no 3. I was born and lived at no. 5 from 1945 until I married in 1974. I did not go to St. Paul's school, as I attended st cuthberts in pemberton. I am trying to remember some of these name. I have a photo I will dig out of a coach trip to trentham gardens - the coach driver being jimmy Burnley who also lived in knowles Ave. I will do my best to find it and post it on this site.

Hello. I am trying to find out more about my grandmother Enid Winter. I believe she lived and possibly worked at The Star PH. She then moved in with John and Florence Atherton, 33 Duke Street and married John Thirlwin who lived at 27 Duke Street. Any info would be great.
