Ashurst Beacon about 1952/3. The girl in the pic is my sister Anne Bradshaw, she would have cycled up from Holland Moor with my brother, there are bikes leaning against the beacon. It was said that when the beacon (bonfire) was lit in times gone by it could be seen all the way to Southport (?)

Yes the building is still there It's at the top of Ashurst beacon. Go to Upholland When you reach the shops turn right onto Mill lane carry on untill you come to the Price William pub. Park your car on the car park and you can walk to it. Just past the Prince William is another pub the Beacon Inn. It is just behind there.

There is a similar beacon on Billinge Hill built by the Bankes' of Winstanley Hall to be used a summer house! It is minus the pyramid roof which got destroyed by the 1935 Silver Jubilee bonfire!

I used to live on Ormskirk Road, UpHolland near the Stanley Hotel. Quite often in the summer we used to walk across Elmers Green to Ashurst Beacon. (In the mid 1950s)
We would buy a packets of Smiths Crisps and a bottle of 'pop' from the farmhouse behind the Beacon.
