NEWSPAPER CUTTING SHOWING THE OLD PROSPECT PETROL STATION. THE PETROL STATION WAS DEMOLISHED SOON AFTER CLOSURE. THE LAND IS STILL UNOCCUPIED I WONDER WHY? AS IT MUST BE VALUABLE BUILDING LAND.

This site has now apartments built on it.

Ron, I think you are mistaking this plot with the one that is at the top of Walter Scott Avenue, Whitley which also had a petrol station and is currently undeveloped. Great picture of the Texaco station btw. Put my first gallon of petrol in my moped here, 1977, cost 50p

The number of times my dad took our old Austin 8 (Ethelred the unready) there to be repaired and I used to go there for parts etc in the 50's& early 60's. I walked past it a few months ago and took a photo of the apartments to show my sisters next time we meet.Should be of interest to Linma this cutting.

standisher yes you are correct I thought it was the garage that stood at the top of Walter Scott Avenue. They look very similar.

Ron: I asked a garage owner the same question a few years ago, apparently by law you can't build on a petrol station for a number of years because the ground and tanks need time to vent. Then they can remove the tanks and neutralise the ground.

Seeing that photo brought a tear to my eye, the times I served many a motorist with a gallon of petrol. I can still see my dad walking across that forecourt.

Comment by: RON HUNT on 16th October 2019 at 18:45

John the garage at the top of Walter Scott Avenue had the tanks removed soon after the garage was demolished. That must be at least 10 years ago??

Somebody may be able to date the photo off the petrol prices and the 2 cars in the photo, 5/7 series BMW and what looks like a Triumph Dolomite ( Dolly ) Sprint

Could it be 1964? When my dad took over the garage in 1954 it sold Regent petrol.

Comment by: Linma on 17th October 2019 at 07:02

Prospect garage was on Wigan Road Standish not Wigan Lane.

Photo is post 1971(decimalisation ) and I would hazard a guess around l 1991/93 looking at the pump prices per litre.

In answer to the question regarding the vacant land at the top of Walter Sct ave. There is a restrictive covenant in place that prevents it being used for residential purposes. Until such time this covenant is lifted the land is practically worthless.

There are now only two petrol stations in Standish, at Boars Head and in Almond Brook Road. The prospect station closed about 20 years ago. There used to be another in Preston Road (Langtree garage Ford dealer) that has gone, and just before the Standish boundary at the top of Wigan Lane there was another and the petrol was Fina. At the bottom end of Wigan Lane closer to town, and in Mesnes Road there were two more stations. The two cars in the picture at Prospect garage are BMWs, a big 7 series and small 3 series.

Your right Mr X. I've had another look at the cars and it isn't a Dolly Sprint, would have probably have rusted away by this time

Langtree Garage did do petrol, as did Stan Smiths on Preston Road, now Lidl. Turners at the side of what was the Horseshoe pub had pumps but I only remember its as a repairs garage. Top of Walter Scott Ave was the Fina one and the 2 as mentioned were at the side of the Brocket and what is now 7 Seas Chippy and Papa Luigi's on Wigan Lane.

When you could fill up for petrol and not have a dozen CCTV cameras watching you like today. People have been completely hoodwinked by all this need for surveillance cameras because they think they're going to get robbed or have some Muslim terrorist blowing them up, but in reality it's just make belief, but the conditioning and fearmongering has worked a treat on the gullible masses and now we are sacrificing our privacy because of it.

Comment by: Linma on 9th November 2019 at 15:59

My dad allowed certain customers to have an account, they would fill up, the amount of petrol bought was 'booked', customers were never asked for a signature, and at the end of the month they were sent an invoice. How times change.

Many years ago I used to be a service engineer on petrol pumps working for Pump Maintenance and serviced lots of garages in Wigan, which was my main area, and services those on the Fina garage at the top of Walter Scott Ave, the BP at the side of the Brocket on Mesnes Road, an independant I think it was called the Owls Garage on Chorley Road and lots of others in the town which are just a memory now eg Baldwin Timberlakes where Go Outdoors is now and their other site at Warrington Road near Worsley Mesnes. does any one else remember these?
