Similar gates at the entrance to Brentwood was still there and intact until around ten years ago, they were removed after becoming rotten and vandalised, in fact the whole house has been wrecked by vandals and also by thieves stealing architectural features and fittings.

When I was born in 1948 my mother wanted to go to the Christopher home, which unfortunately didn't have any beds. The house in the photo was a nursing home at the time and I was born there! My mother always used to point out the room, now with a bricked up window, in which I was born. Whenever I come back to Wigan I always drive past and give it a wave.

I too was born in Brentwood July 1948, was it called Park Vale Maternity Home then? I returned to Wigan several years ago and was shocked at the state of the building.

Hi Janet. Did you live in the Wigan Lane area and did you go to one of the local schools? As we were born in the same month and year I wondered if we know each other

I lived for a time with my grandad Wingates Cottage Leyland Mill Lane, we then moved to Pemberton until I was 16. I went to Wigan Girls’ High School, I was called Janet Ramsdale
