In the background the slow rise towards Ashurst Beacon and the ancient Men of the Hills. It was a book that I read at school about ancient men living in caves and caverns in the hills. I've never cared for New Springs and the Wutchy, or the folk that live in the God forsaken place...My heart is in the Hills...And always will be.

The Pemberton Hillbillies, and very apt too, especially the street fights on Rose Hill Street at chucking out time Friday and Saturday nights at West Ward club; after a session on the moonshine Toby ales.

Just imagine the scene over a century ago with a tiny village in the distance and nothing but fields and rolling hills - how wonderful that would have been. I recall reading a book a while back about a puppeteer travelling through the villages around there- for the life of me I can't remember the title. It was really interesting to read his descriptions of the
countryside and the Wigganers he met enroute especially the pit men sat on their haunches, curious to see a stranger 'in't village'!

Veronica - I think the book you mean is 'Puppets Through Lancashire', by Walter Wilkinson, written in the 1930s.

It seems from what you say Jarvo, that some of those ancient old men are still living in your caverns and hills.

That's the one Mick - I found it really interesting but I think it was set before the 1st WW if my memory is correct. The pit men would walk close up and then just drop down onto their haunches in front of him! I got it from the library near me but they had to order it.
