I'm guessing that the location is Springs Branch, and I would date the photograph at around the mid 70's, although I could possibly be wrong on both counts.

I suspect it's in steam.

I was expecting either a 'snoozer' or a 'yawner' Oozy! Still it's early yet!

I suspect that crane is trying to lift Howard's weekly supply of Horlicks of the ground.

This steam crane was built for LMS in 1930-1 and weighs 45 tons. Made by Cowans and Sheldon steam breakdown co. I think the machine was based at Lostock at one time before ending it's working life for BR at Springs Branch.

There's a series of pics of Springs Branch - including some of jobs featuring a later crane - which were from one of the crane crew, Eddie McDermott. Sadly, we attended his Funeral at the nearby St Mary's Church yesterday afternoon.
It was good to see so many former Springs Branch railwaymen saying their farewells to a good friend and natural gentleman.
Strange coincidence to have this reminder of him show up today. RIP.

I think that you mean Lostock Hall (near Preston) Garry..NOT Lostock (near Bolton).
