I sent a pic of the original Boer War Memorial in St Wilfrid's Church back in November, and referred to his name being on the family grave in the churchyard. I had a closer look at it today. There are other tragedies recorded here.
L/Sgt Halton's death is recorded to one side of the main panel, on which are recorded the deaths of his siblings in their infancy: William I, age 4 in July 1862; William II, age 3 on October 13th 1867, and Alice, age 7, three days later on October 16th. On the next panel is recorded the death post-childbirth of his sister, Mary, 130 years ago this week, on February 14th 1888. Her daughter, Mary Halton Ainscough, was born on February 1st, and died 9 months later on October 25th. Mary was the first wife of James Martland Ainscough - who bought up and demolished the houses in 'Spite Row'.
