The derelict Hawkley Hall in December 1968 just before demolition.
The building was at the end of Carr Lane and was built in the 17th century replacing the original 14th century moated hall and many generations of the Molyneux family lived there.

If you look at the window in the centre of the photo that looks lit up, you will see what appears to be a lady in old fashioned dress when you zoom in. Trick of the light obviously.

The Nazis socialism symbol on the hall painted by idiots, is the wrong way round anyway.

Well spotted Garry, When I was on security in the hospitals I had to go out to various sites, Newton hospital near Warrington had a cross like that and I was told it had an old Christian symbolic gesture.

Less a Christian symbol than a eastern religious icon. Perhaps the short haired gentlemen who sprayed the wall were Buddists.

Poet: I must confess I've not seen many skinheads around Newton with orange robes with doc Martin boots, however life's full of surprises these days, you could be buddi right.

In other towns and cities they preserve their heritage and draw in visitors to see it. Not in Wigan alas. Look at the state of Wigan Pier as another example.

I delivered papers there in 1964/5. Great picture of the rear of the property.
