On the left my father Jack Bowen, Landlord of the Wellfield Hotel in Beech Hill with a customer. I have forgotten the reason behind the photo which appeared in the Lancashire Evening Post.
I also cannot recall the name of the customer, except that he was a Lecturer, perhaps at the Mining College, but that's a guess.
I do know it was very strange to see my father with a pint in his hand, as if he were drinking, since he was never known to take a tipple while "on duty", something he abided by for the 24 years he was in the trade. He'd been given this advice way back in 1950 by other pub landlords who knew it could be a slippery slope, dad wasn't teetotal but kept to this advice throughout his career in the trade.
I think the photo may have been taken shortly before his retirement in May 1974, perhaps that was the reason for it.
