Around 1am, Blamire's lorry& trailer heading towards Wigan, failed to take the bend opposite Grove Lane/Moss Grove/Wigan Road. Collided with the building and stopping before Turners Garage. Unfortunately, our car was within the building. Lone policeman directing traffic past the scene. The tractor unit was towed up to Prospect Garage (near the lodge gates)

If it was taken to Prospect Garage my dad must have worked on it.

Didn't a Mrs Cox have the Horseshoe at the time of this accident ?

Hi Linda, I used to see you at your Dad's garage whenever my father needed oil or at time repairs to the old Austin 8.1956-62.He used to send me up for the stuff -castrol oil and parts
The wagon must have been recovered during the early hours of the morning and towed to your Dad's place.I have a photo of it near to the garage building later that day. (I'll upload it later today.)

I wonder if that's my Dad on top of the wagon. My Dad was a gentleman, always had time and respected everybody and everybody had nothing but a good word to say about him.

The Cox's certainly did have the pub at the time of the crash, 12 year old Ronnie Cox was lying in his bed at the time and ended up nearer the ceiling than the floor, he still tells the tale to this day and ends up nearer the ceiling every time he tells it

Yes I remember Ronnie telling the tale of hearing the bang and the front wall had gone. Scary when you think about it. Think thats why they put the railings around the Grove Lane side of the bend.

Taken when Standish was a different entity, from Wigan Borough, and came under Lancashire County. Wigan Borough Police wore coxcomb helmets, distinct from Lancashire Police.
