Its lovely to peer into their lives -the people are no more but I wonder if the cottage on the right is still standing. Even the farm buildings could still be here.
It was at the bottom of Coppull Lane and it used water from the River Douglas to operate the mechanism. I've forgotten the name of the mill. It will no doubt come to me the very second I click on the submit button. I think it was called Sutton's mill. There you go.
Possibly the bottom of Coppull Lane, Ron? There was a mill there.
Definitely near the river, Coppull Lane?
On the 1890 ordnance survey map Sutton Mill is at the end of Coppull Lane close to the River Douglas, on the other side of the river is Nailmakers Row, all of which is close to Bottling Wood.
You're correct with Sutton's Mill, Ozymandias.
If you were stood on that very spot today Veebs, you'd be looking at phase ll of the Douglas Valley flood alleviation scheme, or more probably better known as ' The Dam '....' Nothing beside remains. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare, the lone and level sands stretch far away. '
Not far from the 'Camel's Hump' then .....which is about 55yrs since last I went there! The name links in with the poem Ozy! I hope the mill owners were well compensated!
Looks like the 'OLD WOMAN WHO LIVED IN A SHOE.'
