I was interested in finding where my maternal great grandparents lived in 1881 - I knew they had married in 1873 at St Thomas’s Church, off Caroline Street.
I found them in 1881 living at Hilton’s Yard off Queen Street - they had no children. It was several years later before I found out that they’d already had 4 children by 1881, all of whom had died before they reached their first birthday.
They moved around a bit, Bretherton’s Row, the Wiend, Albert Street Hindley, Forge Street (Ince) and Harper Street. My maternal great grandfather was a Wigan tram driver and in total they had 14 children but only 6 survived into adulthood, it did make me wonder just how “healthy” these Wigan Yards might have been.
I’ve looked at part of the area of their first home near Queen Street and listed the number of Yards situated around that section bounded by part of Queen Street itself, Chapel Lane, Chapel Street and Princess Street. Here they are, but of course there were many more of these yards in Wigan in those days, I've also included a few of the pubs in that small section of town.

You can see the turntable at N W station just above Faggy Lane.

Forgot to add that I got the locations for the Yards from that excellent resource wiganworld! However the location given for Lea's Yard left me puzzled, I expected it to be Princess Street, not Pitt Street.

Wasn't there a jam bottling plant in Queen Street?.

Keith,
Sorry to appear naive, but where did you find the map? My G/Grandfather had Draper's shops on Chapel Lane, at 128 & 105a from about 1861 to 1885.
I would be interested to know just where they were situated.

Helen.B. 128, Chapel Lane is between Wood Street, and Bradford Street. The only 105a Chapel Lane, is in Parbold according to the Google map.

Albert,
Thanks for your info. Believe it or not, I used to work in Bradford Place, off Bradford Street.
According to the 1881 Directory on Stuff, WW, my G/ Grandfather John Gilmour had a Drapers shop at 105a Chapel Lane. The 1881 Census also substantiates this,

Helen B, 105 Chapel Lane was on the corner of Princess St, it is shown on this map, on the same side as Premier Jam.

Was it Queen Street, or Princess Street where Maggie lived?, most of you will know to whom I am referring. Went to several domestics there. It was tragic, the end that befell her.

Albert..Maggie lived at the bottom end of Queen Street.
