Marriebonne, or is it Marylebone?

Comment by: RON HUNT on 20th January 2016 at 15:12

It was originally Marriebonne( see some of the older postacards on here) but appears to have got changed over the years.

RON, would it not have originally been Marie La Bon (Mary the good)?

Nice picture. Going to school, we always pronounced the name as 'Marriebonne', with a silent 'le'. No one knew why, it was something you just had to learn.

RON, having looked at the Postcards I think it must have been known as 'Marriebonne'

It still says Marriebonne, on the the side of the building seen in the photo.

Dennis ,what is the flat area and gardens on the other side of the fence,is it a park or perhaps a cemetery front,it looks a nice well kept area.

sam.h, now it's a grassy area with trees. When this picture was taken it looks like it was a small Park.

Looks like it is taken from Milton Grove and the park is still there.

It's Marylebone Park Sam, a mansion named Bank House was on here further up towards Tennyson Drive, the land was bought by the council and the house demolished, the ancient Beech trees can still be seen that lined the driveway to the house, those little saplings behind the picket fence have grown into a nice hawthorn hedge.

The park was known locally as 'Little Park', presumably to distinguish it from the big park, Mesnes Park.

My Great Grandfather , George Lowe , his wife Annie Riley and five children lived in a house called Hurstlea around this area in the early 1900’s . He was a local Estate Agent , Auctioneer and Valuer .. Any information or photos please to me .. I can’t get over how tranquil and well kept this area looks .
