I worked at John Pit maintaining those locomotives, they were very over worked and in poor condition.

John Pit closed around 1955 and Standish Hall drift mine about 10 years later. It was reworked a few times last time was in the late 80s The area has been reclaimed and is totally unrecognisable now. When I was last strolling around over there the footings for the building on the left were still there in the undergrowth. The old war memorial which is more or less in the centre of the picture is also still there.

I remember these two trains taking coal though the back of Beech Hill past what is now Milliken, to join the main line sidings at Whitley Crossing
