The Dog and Partridge in Chapel St, Pemberton. Known locally as JEM LOWES. A very sad site.

When was this photo taken? I thought that had already been turned into a dental/medical laboratory.

This takes me back to our ramble around the district Brian. Another sad closure

JEM LOWES a pub that never failed to get a mention in one of Harry Pemberton,s routines,,,,and never failed to get a laugh--- a very funny man without any of the present day smut that is dished up now

My first local when I would be about 17. Me and my mate would sit in the room on the left and play dominoes with the old regulars. I remember going in one night and it was a Darts and Dominoes night. I thought I was in heaven when they came around with plates of butties and pies for FREE L.O.L.
Never saw any trouble all the years I went in there Happy Days.
If I remember correctly didn't you go down a couple of steps to get into the lounge which was on the right of the door?

I had my first ever pint of bitter in Jem Lowe's a few days after my eighteenth birthday. My first ever legitimate visit to licensed premises.

If i remember rightly, if you could reach the bar you would get served in Jem Lowe's. Like Ann21 we would have a drink or two before we went to the Albion, that would be in the mid to late 50s.

That was the front lounge Ron though there was another small back lounge along the corridor and you went down two steps to that one, there was another entrance to the front lounge from here at the side of the bar, you also went up two steps and if you forgot yourself you would crack your head on the low lintel, the regulars loved to watch folks do that.

Jem Lowes has been closed down for a couple of years now, it was turned into a dental laboratory at the end of 2012, it looks like that has now closed down.

Cyril It's all coming back.... Yes a remember now you could get to the front lounge two ways. I would say that this was what I would describe as my only 'local'. As I got older I started to go to town and started courting so I didn't spend much time around Pemberton. Must say I have never been in a pub since with the same atmosphere. I can't remember who owned it at that time i.e. early 1960's but I can remember him and his wife? being really nice people as were the clientele. Great Memories

In the sixties Jack and Sheila Keogh were the licencees till they moved back to St. Helens. Then Jim and Lilian.

Shiela and Jack Keogh were my auntie and uncle, my grandfather and grandmother also lived there. My father and mother, Ron and Millie used to "wait on" there at weekends. There were plenty of characters there - Vince who used to be a bus driver and "Old Baker" his father. They had a pen / allotment where they used to keep geese, one christmas Vince wrung the kneck of old Bettie a twenty year old pet goose by mistake.
Plenty of memories
