Another old map of Newtown showing Worsley Hall and other old houses that have given names to streets in the council estate. Ormskirk Road is shown as Robbing Lane, no doubt giving the name to Robin Park as we know it today

See:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_and_Southport_Railway
Extract: "The Manchester and Southport Railway in England opened on 9 April 1855. It merged with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in January 1885. The line eventually formed part of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, 59.5 km Liverpool to Manchester route via a junction with the Liverpool and Bury Railway at Wigan. The route is still in use to day as Northern Rail's Manchester to Southport Line."

The railway line wasn't opened until 1855.

The Southport railway line would not have been on here if it had been built, the map finishes before the canal at Severn Stars.

Jimmy; The Leeds and Liverpool canal goes well psst Seven Stars and the Southport line would have been on it if built.

Seven Stars is halfway across the map, and a quarter of the way up it.
If the Southport line had been built when the map was made, it would be seen running in a north west direction, between the workhouse and the canal.

Exactly, Geoff. Branching off the Liverpool line just underneath the world "ALL" in "All Saints ward" and passing under the main line as it does today.
