Fairburn Class 4MT 2-6-4 Tank No.42297 of Wigan L&Y Shed stands in what appears Hindley Goods Yard on a passenger working in this 1951 photo. In the 1950's there was a late afternoon stopping service from Manchester Victoria SX which terminated at Hindley approx 17.45 and returned to Manchester departing about 18.25.This would explain why the train is standing in the Goods Yard in order for the loco to detach and run round prior to returning to Manchester.

Whats the difference between a Fairburn and a Stanier engine, anyone?

The Fairburn 2-6-4 Tanks were virtual replicas of the Stanier type but with minor modifications and a shorter wheelbase
