These dome shaped pieces were known as German Helmets. These were the last bits to be tipped out of the slag pots. Other flat discs of slag are plentiful on this tip, and were known a giants threepenny bits. There was a railway running along the top of this slag tip, and on one occasion the pots became unstable during tipping, and took the whole train plus locomotive over the side.
