Half a photograph showing School Street Scholes, on a snowy day in 1963. The year of the BIG FREEZE. Taken by Lawrence Isherwood and belongs to Marguerite Isherwood.

What works/ factory/ etc. would the tall chimney in the distance have belonged to?

Comment by: Barbara Parr(Caunce) on 21st September 2012 at 11:45

I was born there also. Would love to see any other photos of School St;

It may only be "half a photo" but to me priceless, shows where my great grandparents lived in the 1890's. Thanks for posting.

The factory chimney in the distance would probably be Eckersleys Mill.

Brilliant picture Ron. I was born in this street too. Where on earth do you get these pic's from ? And. . . have you any more?

Comment by: micky east on 21st September 2012 at 14:38

derekb are you surer that s eckersley's mill chimney ,would itnot be trencherfield which would be in the forefront of eckersleys, which direction did school st run in ie e/w or n/s

i think the photos you have put on of old scholes are brilliant. i lived there for the 1st 10 yrs of my married life. brilliant memories

Comment by: Mick on 21st September 2012 at 22:23

Micky East - School St ran NE to SW.
If you looked along it to the SW, it was more or less dead in line with both Trencherfield and Eckersley Mills.

Comment by: derekb on 22nd September 2012 at 13:07

Mickey East, School St. ran from Greenough St. towards Warrington Lane joining there just before Scholes crossing. As another Mick says the factory chimney could be either Eckersleys or Trencherfield Mill

The building at the bottom is: now the town hall and it's small chimney. Yes! this is looking from Greenough Street. This street now is Morris Street.

Hi mw as I said previously I lived in School St:and I knew
Irene Parkinson. She lived opposite to my house. I was friendly with her sister Marjorie.Do not know where they are now.

,the photo above is not school street..School Street was a long row of houses ,with a corner shop..leading into lime Street ..

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 20th March 2024 at 16:02

I can’t vouch for which street this is but School Street ran parallel with Lime Street. Both strayed at Greenough Street and crossed both Upper Morris Street and Lower Morris Street before exiting at School Lane.
School Street joined at a junction with Orchard Street next the Wigan Little Theatre on School Lane.
