Peter if you walk up this street everyday and cant remember anything there must be something wrong.
It is market street, Hindley - Taken from outside of the Library looking up the street.
I was born in Hindley and I remember the snow,I was eight,in those days there were no empty shop's,the street was buzzing,it was the same everywhere,Tesco's and the other supermarkets changed everthing, the shop on the right was Whittles men's outfitter's,I left the year after but came back in 1966,it was pretty much the same then.
My grandad used to work in a shop called Perrins(that was just a bit further up the street),sometimes i used to go with him during school summer holidays to help out when he went making deliveries in one of perrins old BMC or COMMER vans.
Happy carefree days with my grandad, wish i`d taken some photos.
Hindley was very much a different place then.
the year was 1941 there are four pictures of market st in the snow
Think this could be 1947. I remember my mother telling me that it was the worst winter she can remember.
Perin's was where Woolworth's used to be,as well as a lot of shop's and 4 bank's there was Willcox bread bakery,Excell bread.
MICK
read the comment i was born and bred in INCE ive only recently moved into hindley so in havent any tales to tell
i can tell you some about singapore
Market Street 1941 as above, I've seen a similar photo with people shuffling the snow in the same year. I remember my grandparents from Hindley telling me, how bad it had been that year.
I can't help with where the pic is taken but the year must be 1947. I came home from India with my family that year & it was the first snow I had ever seen in my life.
I used to live up Chapel Street on the right in the photograph.
Great photo! This was back when Hindley was more like Bedford Falls than Pottersville! I remember one of the shops in the background was Bill Hurst's Cycle Shop. I was in the same class as his daughter Carol at St Benendict's in the fifties. Happy days!
in the forties there was two major snow falls in hindley 1947 and 1940 i was born in 1940 jan my mother said the snow was upto the bedroom window,i think she meant it was like in this picture it had drifted to the upstairs window
