Farnoth Hope (my great, great, grandfather) from Astley's Farm Atherton, born 1854, so I think this photo is early 1900's

Wouldnt it be about 1920's - 30's even. I'm only looking at the clothes being worn by the lady in the background. I'd mor ethan likely place it mid to late 20's though, just my thoughts!

Yes, the lady's short dress and cloche hat would make it the twenties.

Comment by: Duncan on 20th September 2011 at 10:56

The style of hat the lady is wearing was fashionable about 1930.

You are probably correct about the date. I just assumed he looked approximately 50ish years old being born in 1854. He lived at Astley's Farm in Atherton I have uploaded another photograph of his pony & trap. I would love to know if there is any more info about him, he had such an unusual first name - Farnoth I've never heard of a name like that before

Because he has an unusual christian name it was easy to find his death record (on Free BMD) as 1933 in Leigh area aged 78.

It's probably a corrution of Farnworth

Comment by: Karin on 20th September 2011 at 20:23

I think Bob's probably right and that his first name is a corruption of 'Farnworth'. However I have never heard of that being used as a first name either.

He is certainly a character, Karin, and you must be very proud of him. Just think how amazed he would be to know how many people have seen him via the internet, a concept almost unbelievable to him! But I'm so glad we have, and thankyou for sharing the photo with us.

It used to be very common in the 19th century to give a child a christian name which was a family surname - possibly the mother's maiden name, or the surname of a respected relative (often one with plenty money, with a view to being remembered in the will).
There were quite few people to be found with the Farnoth surname in 19th c Lancashire and Cheshire, mainly in the Chorley, Oldham, Stalybridge and Ashton under Lyne districts. Also quite a few in County Durham.

I have read Mick's comments with interest and I have done some research on Farnoth Hope. I hope found the first name Farnoth spelt different ways variations are : Farneth, Farnoth, Fearnoth, Farnworth.
The man in the photograph died 3.11.1933 He was born in 1854.

On the 1861 Census Farnworth Hope is aged 7 Scholar living at Daisy Hill, Westhoughton. His dad is James Hope aged 55 years making James DOB c1806.

On the 1807 Census Farnworth Hope is aged 17 coal miner living at Old Sirs, Kearsley Lane, Westhoughton. His dad is James Hope aged 64 years making James DOB c1807.

Fast tracking back to the IGI There is a recording of a marriage at Leigh on 27.12.1759 between John Hope and Alice Farnworth.

On 13.9.1783 there is a Baptism of a child at Leigh called Fearnoth/Farnworth Hope. He is listed as the son of John & Alice Hope. This is some twenty four years after the 1759 marriage. Is is it possible that they are the same John & Alice ?

On 26.4.1808 there is a recording of a marriage between Farnworth Hope & Betty Clark at Deane by Bolton. If this is the same Farnworth Hope that was baptised in 1783 then he would have been aged 25 years when he married.

I am now making a massive assumption - was it possible that Farnworth Hope & Betty Hope had a son called James c1806 or c1807 ?????

If they did then this would explain how the first name of Farnoth came to be used. I know Mick said it was common in the 19th century to use a maiden name as a first name but was it also common in the 1700's ???

I hope somebody can advise me about this.

Also I hope that somebody can advise me if the James Hope born c1806 or c1807 is the son of Farnworth Hope & Betty Clark ? Can anybody advise on this ?
